A Texas mom accused of taking her healthy son to the hospital 323 times and forcing him to undergo 13 major surgeries has pleaded guilty to recklessly causing injury to her child, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Kaylene Bowen, 35, was arrested on December 6, 2017.
Bowen claimed her 8-year-old son was dying from a rare genetic disorder and was in needed a transplant, according to Dallas–Fort Worth's KTVT-TV.
The boy, whose circumstances are eerily reminiscent of those of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, had reportedly been placed on oxygen and used a wheelchair and feeding tube. These actions led to life-threatening blood infections, the Star-Telegram reported.
But after staff at the Dallas hospital who were treating the boy looked into the case, they reportedly concluded he did not have cancer – or any of the other medical conditions claimed by his mother.
Bowen now faces a possible sentence of two to 20 years in prison.
The 8-year-old and two of his half-siblings have reportedly been removed from Bowen's care.
"I am happy that she decided to do the right thing. Eventually, the lies had to stop," the boy's father, Ryan Crawford, stated, according to The Star-Telegram.
Crawford told the newspaper he had repeatedly failed to convince family court judges the child's mother was putting his son through unnecessary medical procedures.
"Now, hopefully, those who thought a mother could never do this to their child will see evil does exist," Crawford said, referring to his son's experience as "torture."
Bowen is due back in court on October 11, The Dallas Morning News reported.
