QUEENS, NY — A knife-wielding nanny stabbed several newborn infants and adults with a meat cleaver and butcher knife during an attack at an illegal New York City day care center.
“A woman was screaming, ‘Help me! Somebody just help me!’” neighbor Kayla Cho recalled of the early morning September 21 incident at the unlicensed Mei Xin Care Center in Flushing, Queens.
New York Police Department Assistant Chief Juanita Holmes said Yu Fen Wang cut three babies — a boy and two girls, aged just three days to one month — and hit and fractured the skull of a fourth child. The suspect also allegedly stabbed a 63-year-old staffer in the torso and a 31-year-old new dad in the leg.
CNN reported that cops responding to the grisly scene found Wang, 52, unconscious and bleeding from a self-inflicted slice to her wrist. She was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Queens, where doctors treated her wounds before she underwent psychiatric evaluation.
The New York Post reported 30-year-old Cheng Wang, who is no relation to the attacker, had treated his wife, Jin Yu, to a recuperative stay at Mei Xin Care Center because she suffered from postpartum depression after giving birth to their daughter, Atiana, and they didn’t have family around to help.
“The knife went through the body — from the front to the back,” recounted the dad of his then-13-day-old girl’s injury. “We try our best to help the mommy and the baby. We didn’t know we gotta suffer this much. We didn’t know that there [are] crazy people in there.”
Located in a residential row house on a tree-lined street, Mei Xin Care Center provided “zuo yue zi” —a Chinese tradition of helping new moms and their babies rest up for a month. The center charged parents $4,600, plus expenses, for a months-long stay at the facility.
Fen Wang has been charged with five counts of attempted murder, and amazingly, all her victims are listed in stable condition.
As police search for a motive, Wang said his wife, Jin Yu, continues to experience flashbacks of the crime. “She can’t even sleep,” he said, “because when she closes her eyes she saw the blood on the baby and on the floor.”
