Jennifer Lopez is making the news lately for her recent marriage to Ben Affleck but long before “Bennifer,” she was in a relationship with the “Bad Boy” himself, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs.
The two started dating in the late 90s, according to Yahoo, around the time her album “On The 6” was released.
On Dec. 28, 1999, the celebrity couple would experience a night from hell. According to New York Magazine, the couple was leaving an album release party when Combs accidentally knocked a drink out of the hand of another partygoer.
The incident, which took place at Club New York, escalated quickly when a man known as “Scar” (Matthew Allen) shoved the “It’s All About the Benjamins” rapper. First-hand accounts said Allen’s friend threw a stack of money in Diddy’s face, shots were fired, and three people were injured.
Lopez and Diddy fled the scene in a Lincoln Navigator, the Daily Mail reported, but they were abruptly pulled over after he ran a red light. During the traffic stop and vehicle search, police found a stolen handgun and both music stars were arrested.
Paper Magazine reported that JLo had been handcuffed to a bench for 14 hours before she was released. Diddy, however, was charged with battery and gun possession and went to trial. He was eventually acquitted in January 2001, according to ABC News.
"I thought I was being shot at," Combs said of the incident. "My hands were up. I started to go down. Everybody started falling all over each other."
Jurors never heard testimonies from Allen or Lopez. Allen did have a statement read in court, while Lopez did not attend at all.
As reported by Harper’s Bazaar, in 2020, JLo reunited with her rapping ex-boyfriend, on his Instagram live, in a virtual dance-a-thon fundraiser for coronavirus relief.
