Rapper DaBaby, whose real name is Jonathan Kirk, was at his Troutman, North Carolina home when a trespasser climbed the fence around his mansion and was shot. Police responded to a call for help at DaBaby’s house around 7:45 p.m. on April 13. They found the 26-year-old trespasser on the football field outside the mansion.
The trespasser was found with a gunshot wound, but his injuries were not life-threatening, according to CNN. He was then taken by Iredell County EMS to a medical facility for treatment. Police stated that the shooting was an isolated incident, USA Today reported.
Troutman Police Chief Josh Watson confirmed that DaBaby and at least one other person was home at the time of the shooting, but he wouldn’t share the identity of the shooter or the trespasser. No charges have been filed in the incident, and the investigation is currently ongoing.
DaBaby seemed to address the incident on his Instagram with a clip of Paid in Full. In the text accompanying the clip, DaBaby explained that he was feeling great after choosing not to take someone’s life the other day. Part of his message also stated, “Buddy ain’t deserve to go, I step righteously.Heal up & live my boy!”
Although the investigation continues, DaBaby confirmed on his Instagram stories that he would be performing at a Dallas nightclub on Friday, April 15, 2022, and in Houston on Saturday, April 16, 2022.
DaBaby has been involved in some gun-related controversies in the past. Following a fatal shooting at the Huntersville, North Carolina, Walmart in 2019, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon, but he was not charged in the shooting. He was arrested on battery charges in Miami in 2020, according to USA Today. Then, in 2021, he was arrested after carrying a loaded gun into a shop on Rodeo Drive.
In the summer of 2021, Rapper DaBaby received widespread criticism for false and harmful comments he made about gay men and HIV during a concert. After his actions were condemned by fans, human rights groups, and celebrities such as Elton John, Rapper DaBaby issued an apology.
