Both the sports world and the tabloids were dominated by the Tonya Harding - Nancy Kerrigan Olympic ice skating rivalry in the aftermath of the vicious assault on the latter in January of 1994.

The sport of women's figure skating was brought into sharp focus just ahead of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway by the whack heard around the world, when a stranger assaulted US skater Nancy Kerrigan at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit. Suspicions immediately fell upon fellow American and rival skater Tonya Harding, who in contrast to Kerrigan's girl next door appeal was seen as unconventional and rough around the edges.
