Investigators say 22-year-old Eleivia Vigil was enjoying her youth. Although she was previously tied to an unhealthy relationship, she had been pulling herself away and meeting new people. Eleivia's family said she was living with them and would sometimes venture out around the town to new and favorite spots and sometimes she would reconnect with her old boyfriend, Carlos Torres.
Victim Eleivia Vigil
On June 22, 2014, authorities said Eleivia came home around 2 a.m. after enjoying a night out around Houston. There was nothing out of the ordinary, until the next morning. Eleivia's family went to her room, knocked and tried to open the door - but they couldn't. Family members weren't too worried initially, thinking she may want to sleep in, so they left her alone. It wasn't until hours later, when detectives said family members looked into her window, when they realized something was seriously wrong. The air conditioning unit was on the ground and Eleivia was not moving. First responders were called, but by the time help arrived, it was too late. Eleivia had passed away and her family was in shock.
Detective Thomas Ferguson with Houston Police told "In Pursuit with John Walsh," when investigators first arrived at the location, the smell of bleach coming from her room "smacked" you in the face. In addition, Eleivia's unclothed body was covered in a towel and the room was in disarray. Houston Police Lt. Christopher Hassig said she had an abrasion to the left side of her face and on her forehead. The white foam around Eleivia's nose was an indication to authorities she may have been asphyxiated and the scene looked as if someone tried to cover it up, investigators added. An autopsy in Harris County, TX later revealed she died from strangulation.
It didn't take detectives long to figure out who to look for first - her on-again-off-again boyfriend, then 27-year-old Carols Torres. He was also the last person to be with Eleivia, according to authorities. Torres did go in to meet with police and provided them with limited information. Investigators said he was out with Eleivia and they bar hopped with friends and he got back to her home around 3 a.m. There were some things that weren't adding up in the answers Torres was giving, investigators add, but they didn't have enough to make an arrest.
As they worked the investigation in the months that followed, they were finally able to get an arrest warrant for Torres.
On December 10, 2014, Torres was arrested, but a judge granted him bond. His family raised the collateral to get Torres out from behind bars. While back out, living his life and awaiting trial, Torres didn't stick around long. At some point, according to investigators, he removed his ankle-monitor and fled.
Authorities say the last time anyone heard from Torres was on Valentine's Day, 2016. At the time, he was last seen driving a 2003 gold Nissan Xterra with TX plates: BT8J480.
In 2014, Torres weighed around 180 pounds and stands 5 feet 7 inches tall. He's a skilled electrician with a tribal tattoo on his right arm. Authorities said he likes higher end, nicer vehicles.
