LOS ANGELES, CA — On New Year’s Eve 2017, the Los Angeles Police say “the wrong look” sparked a deadly shooting in the parking lot of a Kentucky Fried Chicken.
In an LAPD press conference, Detective Ryan Verna said 29-year-old Derek Bryan Dominguez opened fire on 23-year-old Jorge Reyes Jr. on Balboa Boulevard after Dominguez felt a “simple look, the wrong look” was given. The suspect and victim did not know one another previously, and the altercation was deemed to have begun over a “disrespect issue.”
At the time, cops believe Dominguez was ordering food at the KFC with his girlfriend and children, ages four and eight. The incident spilled outside where a confrontation took place, leading to gunfire, where Reyes was shot multiple times in his vehicle.
Initially, according to police, 28-year-old Mallely Espinoza, Dominguez’s girlfriend, was arrested in California. Espinoza was later released and not charged. Both can be seen on surveillance video from inside the KFC just minutes prior to the incident.
Dominguez was already wanted for the murder of Angel Maciel, 28, who was gunned down on October 29, 2017, while skateboarding in the 9900 block of Stanwin Avenue in Arleta. The area is known as a gang neighborhood, although Maciel was allegedly not a gang member.
Maciel’s girlfriend, Stephanie Vargas, told the San Fernando Sun, “We’re not gonna rest until we find out who it is. We just want justice, and we want to know why or who did it. That’s all we want. It’s hard for us not to know who it is. It’s a big, empty feeling we have.”
Police say Dominguez should be considered armed and dangerous and could be in the San Fernando Valley.
