Wyandanch Family Day is an annual event held in Suffolk County, New York. For more than five decades, it’s been a time to bring the community together with a large parade, vendors, and celebrations. The gatherings from this annual event sometimes disperse to private homes later into the evening.
On June 12, 2020, on the day of the festival, a large party with more than 100 visitors in attendance, assembled at a local home on Grand Boulevard. The gathering was peaceful until gunfire erupted.
Late into the night, partygoers called 911 pleading for help. According to Suffolk County Police, more than 20 calls were placed to the dispatch center. Witnesses said there were multiple shots fired, numerous people were injured, and victims needed immediate help. Suffolk County Police immediately sent two teams of detectives to the location.
While working their way through a chaotic scene, investigators said first responders were able to locate eight people who were injured and needed immediate care. One of the victims was shot and in critical condition and another male victim did not make it. The victim who died was later identified as 23-year-old cancer survivor, Ajala “A.J.” Carpenter-Toney. His family said it was one of his first events since learning he was cancer free.
After an intense and lengthy investigation, including reviewing a large amount of video from the scene and questioning witnesses, authorities were led to a suspect they identified as Colin Jerrick.
Not only is Jerrick wanted for this incident, but authorities soon learned he was allegedly involved in another deadly incident. On July 31, 2020, only weeks after Carpenter-Toney was killed, 28-year-old Elbert Wright was also murdered. The incident took place outside a home in North Amityville.
Jerrick stands 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs around 200 pounds. He may have grown out his beard. It’s possible Jerrick could also speak with an accent.
Authorities said Jerrick has connections to Florida, mainly because he has a child with a woman who lives there. He also has close connections to New York, according to law enforcement, because of his larger family. Jerrick also has ties to Guyana.
Detectives said Jerrick was a wrestling coach for high school children and he was a “stand out” wrestler himself while in school.
Police said Jerrick could be armed and dangerous. If you have any information, please call or text the IN PURSUIT hotline: 833-378-7783 (3-PURSUE) or submit your tip to: InPursuitTips.com.
