Family members say Dawnita Wilkerson disappeared in the middle of the pandemic in 2020 and has not been seen since. She was 44 years old when she went missing.
On June 21, 2020, Wilkerson's family told 14 News, the mother of six said she was running out from her brother's Indiana home and would be "right back." She has not had contact with anyone since.
Wilkerson's loved ones fear she is in danger and they are not giving up in finding her. In fact, many people who know Wilkerson have reached out to In Pursuit with John Walsh through the ID Facebook page in hopes of getting national attention for this case.
In August 2020, hundreds of people in Evansville attended an event called "Show Up For Dawnita" at a local park. Her family and friends have also put up billboards and printed hundreds of fliers, placing them all over town and in nearby Illinois.
Julia Womack, Wilkerson's aunt, previously told the Courier-Press her niece was always in contact with others, "Every day she calls her mom at 5 a.m. Somebody always knows where she is. And suddenly everybody just stopped hearing from her and we knew something had to be wrong."
In January 2021, Addie Byers-Bryant spoke directly to 14 News, “Keep sharing, keep talking about Dawnita Wilkerson. Keep sharing her picture, keep contacting the detective heads with any new information you have, keep posting, keep sharing.”
In February 2021, the FBI shared new information about Wilkerson's case. She was last seen in grainy surveillance footage from an East-Side Evansville motel climbing into a gray Chevy Suburban on June 21, 2020. Photos on the FBI's missing persons flyer show Wilkerson standing outside the vehicle next to a Black man in a white ball cap.
Police have reportedly identified and questioned that man, but he has refused to cooperate, according to reporting by the Courier & Press.
As of March 2023, the Evansville police confirmed that the investigation into Dawnita’s disappearance is still open.
Family members reportedly say Wilkerson has tattoos including a cross on her upper left shoulder and a heart on her lower back. She stands 5 foot 3 inches tall and weighs 145 pounds.
