CHENEY, WA — An Idaho mom who set off an Amber Alert by disappearing with her 10-year-old daughter, Alissa, allegedly intended to inject the child and herself with bleach in order to kill “parasites.”
Authorities located the pair in Washington state and arrested the mother. Alissa has been placed in Protective Custody Services.
Brooke Helmandollar, 41, has been charged with second-degree criminal mistreatment of a child. Court records indicate that Brooke may suffer from mental-health issues. She was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
According to court documents, Brooke initially pulled Alissa out of school on March 12, claiming that they were moving into a hotel because their home had been infested with parasites and insects. A school staffer noticed that the seats in Brooke’s car were covered in plastic.
After Brooke and Alissa were spotted in Washington on March 20, state authorities issued an Amber Alert. A tip then led police to the hotel where the mother and daughter were staying.
Officers reportedly found bleach, charcoal, and items used to perform enemas. Brooke initially told police she was going to use the bleach to clean the room, but then later allegedly said she planned on injecting it into Alissa and herself to “kill parasites.”
John Helmandollar, Brooke’s husband and Alissa’s father, is also being investigated for child endangerment. Police said that John displayed no concern for his daughter’s safety, and they believe he lied about not knowing where Brooke and Alissa were. Police checked John’s phone and saw that he had been in constant communication with his wife.
Upon being told that an Amber Alert had been issued, John reportedly said, “That’s not going to make me look good.”
John also told investigators that the family’s home was not infested with parasites, and that he believed the combination of prescription drugs Brooke was taking may have exacerbated her mental illness.
In Novemember 2018, Brooke Helmandollar reportedly tested positive for methamphetamine. Police also described her as a “known marijuana user.”
