Police and school officials in Texas are investigating a mother’s allegations that a group of classmates went to extremes to bully her young son during a sleepover in February.
Summer Smith, the boy's mother, said one child purposely befriended her son, SeMarion Humphrey, a 13-year-old student at Haggard Middle School in Plano, in order to fool him into attending the overnighter.
Smith recently posted a video to Facebook that appears to show Humphrey’s classmates laughing as they make SeMarion drink what she claimed was urine. She also alleged the bullies shot her son with a BB gun, taunted him with racial slurs and hit him while he slept.
“How horrible must you be? This is not a prank. This is beyond bullying. You are evil,” the mother said at a March 5 news conference, according to Fort Worth’s KTVT.
Smith said what allegedly happened at the sleepover “was premeditated and it was obvious that SeMarion was only invited for their pure entertainment.”
For over a year, she said, students targeted SeMarion, who “actually made complaints to his coaches” about the alleged harassment “and was told ‘boys will be boys.’”
“When you say there’s nothing you can do, what do you mean exactly?” she questioned of school staff’s alleged inaction, countering, “It seems like there’s a lot of things you could do.”
According to the news station WLOX, the Plano Independent School District said in a statement that “appropriate measures were promptly taken to protect the victim and to investigate the allegations.”
Police are looking into whether the students committed any criminal offenses.
“This has got to stop, and this is going to end with him,” Smith said.
