Chloe Randolph had the world at her fingertips in August 2016. She had recently graduated high school early with an advanced diploma and was beginning classes at Henderson Community College in her hometown of Henderson, a small town along the Kentucky and Indiana border.
Her plan was to become a hospice nurse, and she worked at an assisted living facility while attending classes. She loved her job, which allowed her to care for elderly and mentally handicapped adults.
In the spring of 2017, she met phlebotomy student Mohamud “Gabriel” Abdikadir, and the pair appeared to fall in love quickly. Chloe described him to her friends and family as nice and giving. Her father, Jay Randolph, met Gabriel about three weeks after he and Chloe began dating. He found the young man to be respectful of his daughter, and approved of the relationship.
In July 2017, Gabriel and Chloe moved into a duplex apartment together. A few weeks later, the whirlwind romance took a giant leap when the pair were married at city hall. Just over a month later, Chloe had another announcement — she was pregnant.
She was concerned about how her father would take the news, but Jay was elated to be a grandfather. His daughter’s husband, however, did not share the sentiment about the impending birth.
As the pregnancy progressed, Gabriel refused to go to any of Chloe’s doctor's appointments with her. He was so uninterested and disengaged in Chloe’s pregnancy that Chloe’s stepmother planned to be with her during the scheduled c-section birth on June 13, 2018.
At the last moment, Gabriel showed up at the hospital and wanted to see his son, who the family nicknamed “Slim,” be born. Any hope that Gabriel had changed, however, was quickly lost when he informed Chloe’s stepmom that she needed to take Chloe and the baby home with her so his sleep wouldn’t be interrupted.
One week later, Gabriel packed his things and moved into his sister’s apartment. He filed for divorce that October, demanding that he get full custody of the baby as well as $500 a week in child support from Chloe.
The young mother, however, would not give up her son without a fight. Lawyers were involved and a meeting was scheduled for late March 2018, but Gabriel asked if Slim could go with him to meet some family visiting from out of town. Chloe reluctantly agreed, but Gabriel called her within an hour.
