HOUSTON, TX — A Texas man is behind bars on charges of murder and tampering with a corpse after his mom discovered the body of a woman stuffed into a recycling bin and stashed in his room.
Details of the grisly scene were revealed when Alex Akpan (above, left) appeared before a judge in Harris County Probable Cause Court on September 13.
According to police and prosecutors, eight days earlier, Akpan’s mother peeked into her son’s room to see if he was home. Instead of the 24-year-old Houston Community College student, however, she discovered the bin, which was normally located outside, behind the family’s house.
A warrant from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office revealed the curious mom opened the container, spied a human foot, and tipped it over to reveal “a Black female inside.” She called her ex-husband for help, but neither was able to resuscitate the woman, who EMS pronounced dead at the scene.
Police eventually identified the body as belonging to 23-year-old Irene Yemitan (above, right), and the medical examiner determined she died from strangulation.
According to the Houston Chronicle, a witness told police that Yemitan, an aspiring beauty stylist, had known her fellow HCC student Akpan for just days, and that they both had visited the computer science major at his house several times leading up to her friend’s death.
The witness also revealed she and Yemitan became alarmed on one visit when Akpan allegedly began swearing and tossed a chair because Yemitan had parked her vehicle on the street outside his house.
A judge ordered Akpan, who prosecutors claim is an “extreme danger to the community,” be held on $250,000 bail.
