On June 9, 2022, Chukwuebuka Nwobodo, 28, was charged with murder and tampering with evidence in the killing of 24-year-old Felicia Johnson, reported the Houston Police Department. Johnson has been missing since April 16, 2022 after she disappeared from the InterContinental Houston - Medical Center hotel in Houston, Texas.
According to FOX 26 Houston, Johnson had recently arrived in Houston from California and was looking for work. One of the last known places she was seen was a strip club where she applied for a job.
Johnson was reported missing after her cell phone was found covered in blood on the side of the road. Detectives then learned that she left the hotel in the early morning hours on April 16. She reportedly got into an Uber that had been ordered for her by Nwobodo, and she was taken to his old apartment. She allegedly then met with Nwobodo, got in his car, and he drove her to his current apartment.
According to court documents obtained by FOX 26 Houston, the two agreed over Snapchat that he would pay her $500 to meet up with her.
Homicide Division Sergeant B. Roberts and Detective L. Lange of the Houston Police Department reported that evidence suggests that Nwobodo then killed Johnson at his residence and then disposed of her personal belongings, including her cell phone, in Bear Creek Pioneers Park in Texas. Detectives believe that Nwobodo then disposed of her body within a few days of killing her, but her body has not yet been recovered.
In the two days following Johnson’s murder, Nwobodo took out money and bought supplies, according to KHOU-11. Investigators also found that he made internet searches that included such phrases as "how to be a serial killer," "how to get away with murder," "can bleach destroy DNA," and the "most forested part of Houston." He also searched for "Houston escorts," according to court documents.
Police allegedly found blood in the trunk and backseat of Nwobodo’s vehicle after getting a probable cause arrest warrant for Nwobodo in May 2022. Other items they found in his vehicle included loose latex gloves, a shovel, a handgun, and a large kitchen knife that had blood on it. Police questioned Nwobodo on May 13, 2022, but he was released afterward and has not been seen since.
Ten months after Johnson's disappearance, deputies announced that they found her remains on Feb. 7, 2023 in Montgomery County, Texas. A local justice of the peace said these were only “portions” of her body, according to reporting by Law & Crime.
Although Nwobodo was charged with murder, he remains at large. Anyone with information on Nwobodo's whereabouts or other details of this case is asked to contact the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
