LAKESIDE, FL — A Florida inmate gouged out his cellmate’s eyeballs, put them in a cup, and then carried them into the prison’s mess hall while wearing the man’s bloody ear dangling around his neck.
Larry Mark, 58 (above), was strangled, mutilated, and wrapped in a blood-soaked sheet by an unnamed killer, according to a report in the Miami Herald.
Prison staff at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Lakeside reportedly had no idea that the mutilation had taken place until the killer walked in to the prison’s annex building wearing his victim’s skin.
The murderer allegedly had gotten mad at Mark, who was serving a life sentence for murder, for pestering him.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement would not provide the name of the attacker, who had recently been transferred from Death Row at a state prison. The prison has been affected by staff shortages recently, according to the paper.
Julie Jones, a representative for the Florida Department of Corrections, told the paper, “Any loss of life at the hands of an inmate is intolerable, and we are working with our partners at FDLE to investigate this death and ensure anyone responsible is held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
