Around 10 p.m. on Oct. 22, Buchanan County police officers discovered the body of 35-year-old Amber Dawn Compton in her home. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Her boyfriend, 38-year old corrections employee Dustin Barret Owens, has since been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death. At the time of her death, Compton was reportedly seven months pregnant with Owens’ child. Owens is being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority Haysi facility.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband was attacked by an intruder at home
Early in the morning on Oct. 28, a male assailant broke into the San Francisco home of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The assailant reportedly yelled, “Where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?” before allegedly attacking her husband, Paul, 82, with a hammer. When police arrived, the intruder said he was “waiting for Nancy.” Paul was hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery. The alleged attacker, who has been identified as David Depape, 42, was taken into custody and will be booked on charges of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, and "several" additional felonies, according to San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott.

8 people found dead in Oklahoma house fire in apparent murder-suicide
On Oct. 27, two adults and six children were found dead at the scene of a house fire near Tulsa, Oklahoma. The authorities did not release the identities of the victims, who were believed to be members of the same family but did say that they died in an apparent murder-suicide. When firefighters arrived Thursday afternoon, they found the two adults in the front of the house “with significant injuries” that were “criminal in nature”. According to Chief Jeremy Moore of the Broken Arrow Fire Department, the six children, who were between the ages of 1 and 13, were all found in one room at the rear of the house.

Pennsylvania man accused of burying 6-year-old girl alive
50-year-old John Edward Kraft is accused of choking his 6-year-old daughter "to the point that she had passed out," according to the district attorney, and then burying her alive in the family backyard. He would reportedly beat and bury her when “he believes that she is lying”. He has been charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault, simple assault and endangering the welfare of children, as well as a single count each of strangulation and false imprisonment of a minor. Kraft is being held on $125,000 bail at Greene County Prison.

Massachusetts delivery driver charged with killing runner pleads guilty
On Oct. 26, Angelo Colon-Ortiz, 36, pleaded guilty to the August 2016 murder of 27-year-old Vanessa Marcotte. Marcotte, a Google employee in New York City, was home in Princeton, Massachusetts visiting her parents at the time of her murder. She had gone out for a run several hours before she was found. According to prosecutors, she was found partially clothed with burn marks on her body, and an autopsy determined that she had been strangled during a struggle. Colon-Ortiz’s DNA matched DNA found underneath Marcotte’s fingernails. He was arrested in April 2017 and has been held without bail since pleading not guilty in July 2017. Colon-Ortiz will not be eligible for parole for 45 years.
